Bristol wins Smart City Award in global competition

Bristol has bagged the Smart City Award, prevailing over the likes of New York, Barcelona, Dubai, Singapore and Yinchuan in a tight contest.

Considered to be the ‘Oscars’ of the mobile industry, the GLOMOs had been created to recognize and award all contributions made towards the evolving and developing mobile industry.

The Bristol City Council said that the award given to the city helps it get worldwide recognition as a leading smart city of the future. While announcing Bristol’s name as the award winner under the Smart City category, the judges talked about the contribution made by Bristol Is Open for integrating three networks through software defined control.

A University of Bristol and Bristol City Council joint venture, Bristol Is Open had integrated an underground optical network, a wireless het-net laid with Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, LTE, and 5G experiments, and a radio frequency mesh network deployed on a number of lampposts in the city.

The network integration is supported by the 5G research being done by the University of Bristol, which is providing the first 5G urban deployment in the UK. There was also a mention of Bristol’s smart city Operations Centre during the GLOMO award ceremony. Opened in October 2017, the Operations Centre, brings together and integrates the traffic control centre, emergency control centre and community safety (CCTV) control rooms of the city for the first time.
